OP's point is it's an affectation, aimed at signalling to an in-group. It's not a common phrase. Like "folx" or "foid", the jargon/cant is there to exclude "normies". Even an appeal for help comes with a barbed "... but not from YOU, outsider" meaning.

Perhaps they just "didn't feel like being customer-servicey" often enough:

> The owners of the Pink Peacock Cafe faced an uphill battle against prejudice, discrimination, and hatred, making it nearly impossible for them to continue their noble mission of creating a safe space for everyone.

Top comment:

> Your place was an absolute fucking disgrace. You displayed more hatred and bigotry than any of the folk you are accusing. You didn't fall because of 'the system', you failed because you are a pseudo-intellectual circle jerk with staff who are abusive. Fuck off and good riddance.

Also:

> You failed because opening whenever you could be bothered while selling piss-poor coffee and average food in a cafe which often resembled a messy student's bedroom isn't going to bring the punters in.

> And be honest here, you're closing because you can't afford to fix the disabled toilet. You'll all be fine though. You've got trust funds and wealthy parents who'll help fund your next doomed to fail venture but those poor wee sods that did rely upon you will be let down by nobody but you.

Normal convention is that an agency will make no comment about any ongoing investigation, because making public comment prior to bringing charges could be prejudicial to the case.

If, for whatever reason, the agency feels like it's not risking its own case and wants to blow its trumpet... it really doesn't matter what the names of the spokespeople for the agency are. They don't need to speak anonymously, as they won't get in trouble with anyone at the agency for saying what the agency told them to say to the press. The NYT could just say "officials said" and not name them.

It is not like there is a whistleblower inside the Secret Service with scuttlebutt to dish, and the NYT need to protect the identity of Deep Throat 2.0... and all they had to say was the spam operation itself didn't pose any threat to the UN conference.

I think what the blog author's arguing is that this phrase is unnecessary detail that just adds intrigue to sell a rather mundane story.

No, you would use ncurses, or a library built on it (like Curses Development Kit, CDK)

> I plan to expand support to additional targets such as Windows, embedded devices, and the web via WASM.

Great! iTerm2's embedded web browser (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45298793) could then run it, and iTerm2 would then have full and accurate terminal emulation.

I jest, but it sounds very interesting that not even libc is needed. Will it be all caller-allocated structs for storing state?

> People are free to reimplement anything if there’s a spec and no law against it.

Yeah, but if they rewrite GPL tools to corpo-friendly licenses, I'm going to call them corporate bootlickers. Or useful idiots.

Corporations are looking to capture the value of your voluntary labour and sell/rent access to your work for their exclusive profit.

You offer software with no requirement to share changes and nobody shares changes, it's just corpos asking you code for them for free *surprised pikachu face*

> If you honestly think all humans are born equal

I don't. But in addition to genetics, babies pop out of rich and poor vaginas. Socioeconomic status is a much stronger indicator for being incarcerated than genetics (not counting "male vs female"). There is also the theory that the children of prisoners grow up without fathers and are more likely to go to prison, thus perpetuating the cycle. Children that lose both parents (to imprisonment, drug addiction, abandonment) and enter foster care or become wards of the state have terrible life outcomes. Not genetic, but familial due to disrupted social support networks.

I also think that if, for example, you get addicted to heroin, and you don't have a good support network, that will be your only life until you're dead. But if you do have a good support network, you have an better chance of getting clean and staying clean.

Remember when Pennsylvania judges took kickbacks to send teenagers to for-profit detention centers? They ruined thousands of people's entire lives, but hey they made a quick buck!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kids_for_cash_scandal

How many others are profiting from keeping prison populations topped up? Perverse incentives, ensuring the US has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, with only the People's Republic of China rivalling it for prison population. Make slavery legal again with this one weird trick called the 13th amendment's "except as punishment for a crime"

I am OK with prisoners being rehabilitated, this includes them working. I am not OK with their jailers profiting. Nor am I OK with employers profiting by having unfair power over pay and conditions they wouldn't have with free citizens.

Recent metaanalysis of intervention effectiveness (2025, UK) https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/680101e3da5bb...

In short: humans are not inherently good 'uns or bad 'uns. The social interventions made by friends, families, community, state-run programs, have a discernable effect on reoffending rates.

Because it's useful.

https://go.dev/doc/effective_go#embedding

> Embedding types introduces the problem of name conflicts but the rules to resolve them are simple. First, a field or method X hides any other item X in a more deeply nested part of the type. If log.Logger contained a field or method called Command, the Command field of Job would dominate it.

> Second, if the same name appears at the same nesting level, it is usually an error; it would be erroneous to embed log.Logger if the Job struct contained another field or method called Logger. However, if the duplicate name is never mentioned in the program outside the type definition, it is OK. This qualification provides some protection against changes made to types embedded from outside; there is no problem if a field is added that conflicts with another field in another subtype if neither field is ever used.

No no no.

We should put Asia at the top, Europe bottom left, Africa bottom right.

You could do this today on Windows with NTFS Alternate Data Streams.

Windows also supports "resources" (menus, icons, etc.) that can be compiled and linked into the executable.

Resource forks died out because users want to easily see where data is hiding, and having multiple files attached to the same name didn't make the filesystem fast or manageable.

Resource bundles (borrowed from RISC OS) allowed hiding the resources in the Finder by presenting them as an app, but also making it easy to open the Contents folder and see the internals
